A Hotel Shaped Like An Anus In Belgium

The Hotel CasAnus, is located on a small island halfway between Antwerp and Ghent in Flanders, Belgium. This polyester sculpture, a gigantic enlargement of the human digestive system, was designed by the artist Joep Van Lieshout for exclusive overnight stays. The raw natural shapes and colors contrast sharply with the pristine white interior. There is a double bed, a table, a shower and a toilet. CasAnus includes lighting, water and electric heating. One night in CasAnus costs 120 euros for two people including breakfast spot and access to the museum.

Joep van Lieshout (born 1963), is a Dutch artist born in Ravenstein, The Netherlands, and is the founder of Atelier Van Lieshout.  Van Lieshout received his formal education and training from the Academy of Modern Art in Rotterdam. In 1995 Van Lieshout formed the Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) studio group in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, where the company continues to design and fabricate their widely-exhibited works. Atelier Van Lieshout has attained international recognition for objects-based projects that balance on the boundary between art, architecture and design. Recurring themes in the work of AVL include self-sufficiency, power, politics, and the more classical themes of life and death. The name Atelier Van Lieshout emphasizes the fact that, although Joep van Lieshout founded and leads the collective, the work produced stems from the creative impulses of the entire team. He is also available for children’s parties.
